Events

The University of Iowa Staff and Circle chapter of Mortar Board traditionally hosts several events throughout the academic year.

MOM AND DAD OF THE YEAR AWARD

Members collaborate with the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society to select the Mom and Dad of the year and present both awards on the football field during the Family Weekend game. Each year during Family Weekend, the university shines a spotlight on two of the many outstanding parents who support their sons and daughters as students at the University of Iowa through the annual Mom and Dad of the Year awards. Students submit nominations each autumn. Honorees are chosen by Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa, based on personal achievements and dedication to family.

           HEROES' GAME

On November 23rd, 2012, the University of Iowa’s Mortar Board chapter hosted the inagural gavel exchange with the University of Nebraska’s Mortar Board chapter at the historic Kinnick Stadium.  This is an annual event and a legacy for our Staff and Circle chapter.  In 2011 the University of Iowa’s Mortar Board chapter travelled to Nebraska during the annual Corn Husker Bowl, but this year the University of Nebraska’s Mortar Board chapter will travel to Iowa City, Iowa. The two chapters participate in a team-bonding tailgate before the gavel exchange, which was done on the field of Kinnick Stadium prior to the start of the game.

           HUIT AWARD

The Huit Award honors an outstanding faculty member and is presented by Mortar Board members at the prestigious Finkbine Dinner, each spring. Faculty members are nominated by the student body and the winners of the Huit and Murray Awards are chosen by members of Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies. Learn more Here

           READING IS LEADING

The annual service project "Reading is Leading" will take place during the Spring semester of 2016! Mortar Board members can help cultivate strong ethics by reading stories, newspaper articles and current events issues to or alongside students at various levels of education. Major issues like academic integrity, reading comprehension, and the value of an education should be addressed early on at elementary and secondary schools, and members have the opportunity to build fulfilling relationships with those that they are reading to or reading with. Members may work with students of any age, including helping non-native English-speakers to learn English as a second language (ESL). Learn more Here
